It is very hard tostay focused on indoor tasks with the siren call of my flower and vegetable gardensor the pleading looks from my boys who are itching to go to the beach. It seems totake a good thunderstorm for me to get anything done indoors. So when I recently found myself “forcedto be in the studio” after a string ofsunny weekends, it was apparent thatI’d been neglecting more than just mysewing projects. The room was a mess!Piles of fabric scraps had been pushedinto one corner and yardage was piledon the cutting table waiting to befolded. Magazines and patterns hadfallen out of the overcrowded bookcase.I couldn’t find my favorite ruler. Myspace needed a good cleaning so I couldget to work without distractions. When every spool was in its place andmy tools were organized, it becamequite clear that I have a lot of stuff, and that more stuff (in this case fabric, tools, patterns, and supplies) does notdesigns with a fresh take on color andcontrast. There’s a freedom to be morecreative when the distraction of infinitechoice is taken away.It is interesting to see how othermodern quilters use restraint orminimalism in their pieces. Some doit digitally by manipulating images ontheir computers, while others approachtheir designs intuitively and createon-the-spot. However you work, I hopeyou find inspiration from the colors, patterns, and creativity alive and well inthe modern quilting movement.Best, gettingstartedFor the projects in this issue (unlessotherwise indicated):When piecing: use ¼" seamallowances. The innovation and the ideasusually occur when I don’t have what(I think) I need, forcing me to rework, revise, and edit down my designs.“Making do” in the studio has led toVivika Hansen DeNegreEditorThis issue of Modern Patchworkfeatures an interesting improvisationtechnique from Malka Dubrawsky. Her approach is reminiscent of “less ismore.” Edit down your fabric choices tothe most basic and highest contrast—black and white—then add back thecolor with restraint. The result is joyful, fresh, and minimalist. For Malka, limiting choices resulted in innovativeThis is my summer rainy-day project: apixelated self-portrait cropped close andedited to eleven colors.
