Withotherresultsgoinghisway, hetrails
championshipleaderFernandoAlonso
byfourpointswithfiveracesremaining.
“We’veseenlotsof performanceshifts
thisseason,”saidRedBullteamchief
ChristianHorner,“andcan’ttake
anythingforgranted.”Vetteldoesn’tjust
havespeedinhisfavour,though:healso
hassignificantmomentum.
InadditiontothedoubleDRSrear

Thesafetycarwasdeployedand

againstRäikkönen,butthenhe’ddone
littlewrongandstewardsregardedthe
openingscuffleasaracingincident.
Alonsowasunfortunatetohavebeenso
farback:hewassettoqualifyatasimilar
pacetoButton,butbackedoff foryellow
flags–triggered,ironically, by
Räikkönen–andthenlostanothertenth
behindVettel,whohadeasedupbecause
of thecaution.Theseconddelaymeant
thedifferencebetweenstartingfifth,on
thecleansideof thetrack,andsixth...
StewardsgavetheGermanonlya
reprimand,ratherthanthecustomary
placedrop:somesourcessuggestedthe
Spaniardhadexaggeratedthescaleof
hislossandhisclaimsdidn’ttallywith
data,hencetheunsympatheticear.
Vetteleasedawayagainwhentherace
resumedattheendof laptwo,assisted
inpartbecauseKobayashi’ssecond-
placedSauberbrieflyjammedinfirst
justbeforetherestart.Theproblem
sooncleared,butKobayashiwasalmost
twosecondsbehindwithinalap.Button
ranthird,havingclawedbackhis
penaltybymissingthechaos,from
FelipeMassaandRäikkönen,who
muscledSergioPérezasideasthey
sweptthroughTurnOne.Thatenabled
LewisHamiltontorelegatethe
Mexican,too,withNicoHülkenberg,

thepackattherestart,whileTimo

all.TheGermanfeltaproblemwithhis
Marussia’sfrontleftrimduringthe
formationlapandreturnedtohispit,

transpiredthathehadstruckaloose
wheelnutonhiswaydownthepitlane.
Scareover, heclamberedupto11th
duringtheopeninglap, althoughthat
wouldinevitablybeafalsedawn.
Fromthereon,Vettelhadno
concerns.Hepulledawayathisleisure
andwasoneof thelastof theleading
grouptostop,switchingfromsoftto
hardPirellisonlap17ashesettledintoa
conventionaltwo-stopper.Hepittedfor
thesecondtimeonlap37,takingon
morefreshhardsandbreezinghome
with20secondstospare.“Thecar’s
balancewasabsolutelyperfectfrom
starttofinish,”hesaid.“Icouldpushas
hardasIwantedandstilllookafterthe
tyres.It’svery,veryrarethatyouhavea
raceweekendquitelikethis.”
Havingstarted11thonunscrubbed
softs,Massamoveduptosecondduring
thefirststops,stayingoutforacouple
of lapsafterKobayashiandButtonhad
pitted,TheBrazilianinstantlyfound
half asecondandwasalsohelpedby
traffic,histwoadversariesbothhaving
droppedbehindRicciardo.
Thatsettledsecond,too,Massa
echoingVettel’styrestrategyalmostto
thelapandeasingtohisfirstpodium
finishintwoyears–arelief,he
admitted,althoughitremainstobeseen
whetheroneafternoonwillbeenough
topreservehisFerrariseat.
Kobayashihasbeenundersimilar
pressureatSauber,albeitnothinglike
thathefacedfromButtonduringthe
finalstintonSunday. TheJapanese
madehissecondstoponlap31,yethe
keptteasingenoughspeedfromtattered
PirellistoholdButtonatbayandtake
hismaidenF1podium.Therecould
havebeennofinerstage.
“IthinkIagedbyyearsduringthelast
fewlaps,”saidSauberCEOMonisha
Kaltenborn.“Weweremonitoring
everysectortime,watchingthemgoup
anddown,andKamuiwasbrilliant.I
kepthopingtheracecouldend
immediately, becauseIsowantedhimto

cooleddownandstabilised.”
PérezwrestedsixthfromHamilton
onlapsix–lungingdowntheinsideat
thehairpin,frontwheelslocked,not
longaftertheteamaskedtheMexican
tonursehistyres–buttheMcLaren
movedaheadduringthefirsttyre
stops.Pérezthentriedtorepassatthe
samespotonlap19,butHamilton
forcedhis2013replacementtothe
outsideandtheSauberrotatedgently
intothegravel,itsracerun.
TheEnglishmanwasstillplaguedby
understeerthathurthimduring
qualifying,althoughthecar’sbalance
seemedtobeimprovingjustbeforehis
finalstop.“Perhapssomethinglodged
inthefrontwing,”saidWhitmarsh,
“becausethecarseemedtoimprove.
Lewisdidn’treallywanttocomeinfor
hissecondstop–hethoughtlap31was
toosoon,becausethetyreshadcome
good,butRäikkönenwasnowsetting
fastestsectortimes.Hisstoponlap30
hadbeenslightlyslow, however,and
wethoughtthatmightgiveus
anopportunity.”
Hamiltondulycamein,rejoined
almostalongsidetheLotusand
completedthemovebyclaimingthe
insidelineforTurnOne.
HülkenbergandMaldonadohad
uneventfulafternoons,gainingaplace
apiecewhenPérezdepartedbut
otherwiseendingtheafternoonas
they’dstartedit,littlemorethana
secondapartinseventhandeighth.
Webber’sdaywasquitetheopposite,
theAustralianrecoveringwithgreat
spiritandcoaxinghissecondsetof
hardsfor27laps–theday’slongest
stintbeingequalpartsspeedand
consistency. “Iwasinreverseatone
point,”hesaid,“soI’mquitehappyto
havefinishedwithineightsecondsof
fifth.”Givenwherehe’dbeenonlap
three,itwasquiteaperformance.
AndGrosjean?
“It’sabouttheseventhtimehe’sbeen
involvedinsuchanincident,”
Hornersaid,“andit’scompletely
unacceptablethatthesethingsshould
keephappeningatthislevel.He
doesn’tseemtolearn.”
TheLotusdriverlaterapologised,
notthathecoulddomuchelse.
Ricciardotookthefinalpoint,
narrowlybeatingtheabout-to-retire-
againMichaelSchumacherafter
theGermanpickedhiswaythrough
fromtheback.
“It’sbeenanunluckyweekendfor
Fernando,”saidFerrariteam
principalStefanoDomenicali,“but
nexttimeitcouldbesomebodyelse’s
turntosuffer.Wehavemoreupgrades
comingandthere’sanopportunityto
reactnextweekend.”
