OMETHING OF

ALUE
The Monroe Institute is an educational and research organization devoted to the following premise:
Focused consciousness contains definitive solutions to the questions of human experience. Greater
understanding of such consciousness can be achieved through coordinated research efforts using
an interdisciplinary approach.
The results of such research efforts are meaningful only if there are practical applications—something of value for our
contemporary culture. The Monroe Institute proposes to introduce, at all levels of human endeavor, abilities of mental
functioning that will constructively change man’s direction and destiny.
B
EGINNINGS
The Monroe Institute was founded by Robert A. Monroe, a former broad-
casting executive who began to undergo spontaneous experiences in 1958
that drastically altered his life. Unpredictably, and without willing it, he
found himself leaving his physical body via a “second body” to explore
locales beyond conventional concepts of time and space. Robert Monroe
documented these experience in
Journeys Out of the Body
, (Doubleday,
1971; published in eight languages worldwide), in
Far Journeys
(Doubleday, 1985), and in
Ultimate Journey
(Doubleday, 1994).
Robert Monroe formed a research group and began investigating methods
and techniques of accelerated learning in the late 1950s. That investigation
led to remarkable discoveries dealing with the very nature of human con-
sciousness, and in 1975 Mr. Monroe patented Hemi-Sync
®
—an audio tech-
nology which provides its users the opportunity to achieve personal goals
by facilitating and sustaining a purposefully focused, highly productive,
coherent mind-brain state.
In the early 1970s, The Monroe Institute evolved from the original research
group and began conducting learning seminars in the exploration of con-
sciousness. These seminars were held at various sites in the United States
and abroard until 1979, when a permanent facility was built in the Blue
Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

Normal brain-wave pattern
with limited focus
Highly focused whole-brain
pattern with enhanced potential
The Monroe Institute is internationally known for its
work with audio sound patterns that can have dramatic
effects on states of consciousness. Institute researchers
observed that certain sounds create a

headphones. The two hemispheres of the brain then act
in unison to “hear” a third signal—the difference
between the two tones. This is not an actual sound, but
an electrical signal that can only be perceived within
the brain by both brain hemispheres working together.
Those observations led to some remarkable findings
dealing with the very nature of human consciousness.
Researchers subsequently learned specific sounds could
be blended and sequenced to gently lead the brain to
various states ranging from deep relaxation or sleep to
expanded states of awareness and other "extraordinary"
states. This compelling research became the foundation
of a noninvasive and easy-to-use "audio-guidance"
technology known as "Hemi-Sync
®
."
The result is a focused, whole-brain state known as
hemispheric synchronization, or “Hemi-Sync
®
”—an
optimal condition for improving human performance.
Specific combinations of Hemi-Sync
®
signals, for
example, can help individuals achieve laserlike focus
and concentration. Different Hemi-Sync
®
signals are
used to facilitate profound relaxation, expanded aware-
ness or other desired states.
The audio-guidance process works quite simply by
sending different sounds (tones) to each ear by stereo
Depending on the intended goals, music, verbal guid-
ance or subtle sound effects are combined with Hemi-
Sync
®
to strengthen its effectiveness.
Hemi-Sync
®
supports a variety of applications:
Enhanced well-being

strengthen the mind-body connec-
tion to boost the immune system

speed recovery from illness or surgery
Creativity and problem solving

broaden perspectives

access intuition

enhance artistic expression

stimulate imagination
Sleep and dreams

fall asleep easily

adjust sleep cycles

counteract jet lag

manage insomnia
Emotional well-being

release stress

reduce anxiety

replenish mental energy
Meditation

quiet the mind

achieve & sustain deeper meditative
states
Learning and memory

improve focus and concentration

speed mental processing

reduce excess mental activity

absorb and retain new information

improve ADD-ADHD symptoms
Expanded awareness

The Monroe Institute’s residential programs are conducted at the Nancy Penn Center and at Roberts Mountain Retreat.
Located in the pastoral foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, these special facilities were constructed to maximize the
effectiveness of the Hemi-Sync
®
process and to provide a uniquely supportive environment for personal exploration.

The residential center houses 24 participants and offers each the use
of a private CHEC (Controlled Holistic Environmental Chamber)
unit. The CHEC unit provides isolation from light and extraneous
sounds. Inside the CHEC units, participants lie down and relax in
solitude, and it is here that the learning adventure begins. Under the
direction of a team of experienced facilitators, an audio network feeds
special Hemi-Sync
®
exercises to each unit. These exercises are
received through headphones or speakers. Each CHEC unit contains
lighting that can be adjusted in both color and intensity. The CHEC
unit is also used as a place for sleep. Supported throughout the night
by relaxing and soothing Hemi-Sync
®
sounds from an overhead
speaker system, participants awaken refreshed, energized, and ready
to meet the new experiences of the day.
For many program graduates, the Center has
become a symbol of home and of freedom.
The Nancy Penn Center has full dining facilities, the Explorer’s
Lounge, a debriefing room for group discussions, and exercise and
massage rooms. The roof deck offers panoramic views of the Blue
Ridge and the stars at night. Evening presentations are held in David
Francis Hall, complete with audiovisual facilities for large-screen film
and video production.
The Bob Monroe Research Lab and the sound production department
are housed in an adjacent building. It is here that basic research—the
heart of past and future activities of the organization—is conducted.
Guidelines

program graduates are eligible to experience a Personal
Resources Exploration Program (PREP) session conducted in the
lab’s specially designed isolation booth.
Each exercise is monitored by a program trainer.
Program participants can enjoy forest walking trails, meditation spots
along a creek and atop the ridges, and swimming in Lake Miranon.
